MOTHER

The MOTHER series was inspired by a desire to create contemporary “Madonnas” that aren’t Madonnas, with a focus on MOTHER as divine creator, as physical Mother in reality (me, you and universally), Mother as caretaker, and the effects of motherhood. I incorporated my love for materiality and showing aspects of the structural systems of stretched canvas and the frame with occasional veil-like extensions which frame the central painting, pushing the boundaries between image and object. I have worked some MOTHERS past their vulnerability point into solid more formidable faces. Some are hard and bold, some are muted, and disappearing and others are in between. Gold adorns compositions hinting at halos with some MOTHERs and others look at the viewer straight on in their simple humanity. I frequently use the postmodern drip using white interior house paint typically used in interior design (Benjamin Moore variants of white), obscuring and taking over the image/object. I consider it’s use as a hidden nod to the prevailing ideas of female domesticity. I believe all of my MOTHERS can coexist with their fragility, presence, urgency, and depth. All pieces in this series are titled: MOTHER, (in all caps) with a reference to the divine.
